Bilateral Cooperation
1.Bilateral political ties
The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Angola established diplomatic ties on January 12, 1983. Since then, the relations between the two countries have developed smoothly.
Important visitors to Angola from the Chinese side include: Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Gong Dafei (May 1983); Foreign Minister Qian Qichen (August 1989); Vice Premier Zhu Rongji (August 1995); Vice Minister of Foreign Ministry Li Zhaoxing (April, 1996); Assistant Minister of Foreign Ministry Ji Peiding (September, 1997); Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan (January, 2001); Li Tieying, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (October 2001); Wang Wenyuan, vice chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (April, 2002); Vice Minister of Foreign Ministry Yang Wenchang (July 2002); Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan (February 2005); Vice Minister of Foreign Ministry Lü Xinhua (July 2005); and Jiang Yaoping, vice minister of information industry (November 2005).
Top leaders of Angola who visited China are: President Dos Santos (October 1988 and October 1998), Speaker of the National Assembly of Angola Vandunem (November 1993), Foreign Minister De Mora (March 1994), General Secretary of the Angolan governing party MPLA Lopo Do Nacimento (September 1998), Defense Minister Payama (May 2000), General Secretary of the Angolan governing party MPLA Lourenco (May 2000), and Speaker of the National Assembly of Angola Almeida (May 2001).
2.Bilateral trade relations and economic cooperation
The governments of China and Angola signed a trade agreement in 1984 and set up a Mixed Economic and Trade Commission in 1988. The trade volume between the two counties in 2005 was US$6.95 billion, of which China's exports were US$370 million and imports reached US$6.58 billion. The economic housing project with Chinese assistance has already been completed. China relieved all the expired debt of Angola, which should have been repaid by the end of 1999.
3.Exchanges in the fields of culture and education
The governments of China and Angola signed an agreement on cultural cooperation in 1988. Currently there are nine Angolan students studying in China.
