Egypt: Euro-Mediterranean virtual energy university endorsed

Five North African nations – Algeria, Egypt, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia – along with 38 European and Mediterranean states stand to benefit from a new initiative to set up an ‘energy university’ that will provide free, specialised education for energy professionals via an online platform.

Senior officials of the 43 member states of the Union for the Mediterranean, or UfM, endorsed the new university during a conference in Barcelona, Spain, that was held next a high-level UfM conference entitled “Towards a Common Development Schedule for the Mediterranean” on 26 November.

UfM Energy University is the third higher education institution to be set up by the UfM.

The initial was the Euro-Mediterranean University in Slovenia, which was established as an international network of universities – 179 members from 38 nations – to improve higher education quality through postgraduate programmes with a appropriate focus on cultural diversity.

The second was the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fes in Morocco, which promotes higher education and research cooperation across the Mediterranean via a range of programmes.

To tackle energy challenges and promote human resource development, UfM Energy University will focus on developing expertise in energy efficiency and renewable energy through free online courses, and enhanced networking part regional experts in energy efficiency and renewable energy.

“Energy University is a free, online educational resource, offering additional than 200 vendor-neutral courses on energy efficiency and data centre topics to help you identify, implement and monitor efficiency improvements within your organisation,” says its website.

A core group of nations – Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey and Algeria – will act as project facilitators to ensure the content of the courses meets the identified needs and priorities of the region in coordination with the university’s promoter, Schneider Electric.
